Rivers are polluted by human activity, with each one carrying waste from industry, agriculture, cloth and plastics in proportion to population and the level of controls as to waste disposal - and ultimately prosecution of offenders.
In the UK complaints about contamination or dumping stand a fair chance of obtaining a conviction. In China and India the chances of bringing pollution criminals to justice are slight, to non-existent where businesses have considerable influence locally, and corrupt practices are a way of life, not just as the exception, but as custom and practice.
This is where the strategy for deployment of river cleaning machines is all important, together with a no-fault reward system for landed waste that is binding on local authorities.
Though RiverVax is designed to harvest plastic before it disperses more widely in the oceans, it is possible to adapt the machine to contain oil spills. We wonder then if it might be probable to develop a module to collect and recycle chemicals and heavy metals.
FRONT VIEW SUBSURFACE MODE - As with the diagram above, the Pilot litter picker is traveling towards the viewer - but here we see the filtration head lowered to harvest plastics in rivers or deeper in harbours and marinas. STRATEGY
Sometimes it is the operational strategy that determines how effective any clean up operation might be. We call this intelligent fishing.
Assuming that the machines are matched to the waste they are commissioned to deal with, they will have a limited capacity and that capacity and the characteristics of the river in question determines what the deployment and in what numbers RiverVax would be required to deal with any particular problem.
Concerning rivers, that also means an effective transfer of harvested waste to an effective waste treatment plant. Hence management and facilities locally will determine what is possible. We must then adapt to meet a challenge and work with other stakeholders to achieve the United Nations SDG 6 objectives.
PATENT PENDING - The filtration module, cargo hold and offloading mechanism is shown in red in outline form. The system consists of several integrated components, incorporating motors, pumps, hydraulics, electronics and computer programs - all to be powered by energy from nature - if we are to avoid more greenhouse gas emissions. Note that this is the design for the 12 meter coastal development rig, rather than the 45 meter full size craft. Copyright © diagram Cleaner Ocean Foundation. All rights reserved.
THE WORLD'S DIRTIEST RIVERS IN 2019
SUSTAINABILITY MADNESS
Ironically, chemicals from agriculture, mining and industry are leaching into our oceans eliminating the food store that we need as a backup when agriculture fails.
It may be that permanent riverbank installations could treat agricultural leaching, allied to industrial recovery to reduce discharges.
Who might fund such developments is another question.
POSSIBLE SWITCH FROM 'SOCIAL ENTERPRISE' TO 'COMMERCIAL VENTURE'
The RiverVax development log-jam stems from the fact that as of 2019, nobody is willing to accept responsibility for recovering plastic in international or in territorial waters. Hence, there is no customer - and without a customer - there is nobody to charge, hence no business. If there is no business, even at low levels of return, there can be no investment.

WHAT DRIVES US - It is pictures like this whale shark swimming in garbage that it is about to ingest that makes our blood boil. What are we doing, letting a situation like this develop? The fish eat the plastic and we eat the toxic fish. We are slowly poisoning ourselves and our world.
